When it comes to installing underground detention or retention tanks, precision isn’t a luxury – it’s a necessity. These systems are engineered to perform under specific conditions, and the installation guide is not just a suggestion – it’s your blueprint for long-term reliability and compliance.
Unfortunately, skipping steps or ignoring key requirements during installation can have serious consequences, many of which don’t show up until it’s too late.
1. Tank Uplift and Floatation
One of the most common – and costly – failures occurs when tanks aren’t properly restrained or backfilled. In saturated soil or high water table areas, a tank that lacks proper anti-buoyancy control can shift or float, damaging pipes, lids, and surrounding structures. This often results in full removal and reinstallation.
2. Crushed or Deformed Tanks
Incorrect bedding or backfill materials, such as sharp aggregates or uncompacted fill, can place uneven pressure on the tank walls. Over time, this may lead to cracks, deformation, or even collapse – compromising the tank’s integrity and functionality.
3. Leaks and Pipe Failures
Misaligned pipes, poor sealing, or incorrect inlet/outlet positioning can lead to water leaks, sediment build-up, or system blockages. These issues often require costly excavation and repairs, and can cause localised flooding or erosion.
4. Consent and Compliance Issues
Many councils require specific installation methods and supporting documentation (such as PS1s) to approve tank installations. Failing to follow these instructions can result in failed inspections, delays, or rework – impacting your project timeline and budget.
5. Reduced Performance and Service Life
Even if the tank “seems fine” after a poor install, its performance may be compromised. Inadequate falls, poor venting, or incorrect outlet levels can lead to inefficient drainage, standing water, and unnecessary wear on pumps or components. Over time, this shortens the system’s lifespan.
Avoid the Risk – Follow the Guide
At APD, we provide detailed installation guides with every tank system we supply. These documents are based on extensive engineering, local soil knowledge, and years of proven field performance. Following them ensures:
